Film Inspiration: The Edge of Love

Title: The Edge of Love
Released: 2008
Director: John Maybury
Starring: Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller, Matthew Rhys and Cillian Murphy

Two feisty, free-spirited women are connected by the brilliant, charismatic poet who loves them both.

Another film that I've been itching to do for Film Inspiration; with The Edge of Love being set during second world war Britain, there are lot of interesting details from set design, to costumes, to makeup. The story, which is loosely based on real events, follows the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys), his wife Caitlin Macnamara (Sienna Miller) and their friends The Killicks (Cillian Murphy and Keira Knightley).

It's certainly not one of the most critically acclaimed films, and I spend a lot of the time trying to figure out what Sienna Miller's is supposed to be, but despite the questionable nature of everything else, it's a visually stunning film. Although one of the main reasons that The Edge of Love earned a place in my heart is thanks to the friendship between the two main characters Caitlin Macnamara (Miller) and Vera Phillips (Knightley), you don't really see many films based on female friendship, especially set during this time period and Knightley and Miller have really great chemistry together.

Aesthetically, the things I find most inspiring about this film are the costumes worn by Caitlin and Vera - chintzy floral tea dresses and bulky knitwear - it's basically my Autumn wardrobe. As you would expect from a film partially set in Wales there is a lot of knitwear and wool to go around, you'd be lucky to find a scene that doesn't feature wool!
