Film Inspiration: Jawbreaker

Title: Jawbreaker
Released: 1999
Director: Darren Stein
Starring: Rose McGowan, Rebecca Gayheart and Judy Greer

"Three of the most popular girls at Reagan High accidentally kill the prom queen with a jaw-breaker when a kidnapping goes horribly wrong."

I have been waiting for the weather to get meltingly hot to do this film as an inspiration post; it's pure 90's kitsch, bubblegum and neon in style and works perfectly for summer (especially a summer when the 90's are back in fashion). Heavily influenced by teen/high-school films that came before it, the style and plot of Jawbreaker regularly references Grease and Heathers, so much so that the film almost seems like a parody.

A big fan of Grease, director Darren Stein wanted Jawbreaker to take similar cues - a few scenes reference parts of Grease and he cast older actresses in the main (teenage) roles. Even despite the heavily saturated, 90's bubblegum colours the styling is heavily influenced by 50's fashion - particularly Rose McGowan's character 'Courtney' who favours the 'Rizzo' femme fatale look and Lizz Purr who errs towards a Sandra Dee , debutante look.
